History

Rev. and Mrs. A. R. Reed moved to Lafayette in 1944 and started a Pentecostal church. The first location was a store front on Columbia Street which was heated with a wood stove. The original name was the Lafayette Pentecostal Church. There was a struggle as the home mission endeavor sought members and financial assistance. The attendance increased and a building was erected on North 18th street. Wise leadership and a friendly outreach attracted many to become members. Sustained growth was a hallmark of this outstanding apostolic group! They were known afar for the spirited singing of their choir.

In 1958, two acres at the corner of East Union Street and Creasy Lane were purchased. This was rural, but had great potential. New Century Homes erected a beautiful house of God which was the first prefabricated building of its kind! The members moved into their new worship center in 1959 and decided to call it Christ Memorial Temple. Four years later Brother Reed resigned, and in 1963 Rev. and Mrs. Raymond E. Parnell accepted the leadership.

The number of worshippers continued to grow and necessitated changes in the physical structure. Approximately 5 more acres and a sunday school annex of nearly 8,000 square feet were added, along with a 960 square foot vestibule. Next, an addition was added which housed a heated baptistry and changing rooms for men and women. The auditorium was completely renovated and enlarged in 1982.

A host of visitors joined and celebrated Apostolic-Pentecostal worship, the largest number being 425. An enthused membership operated a Christian School for ten years. Baptisms in water and the Spirit continued as revival fires burned. In August of 2000, Rev. and Mrs. Anthony Carson, joined the staff as our associate pastor.

In 2001, the Faith Hall reception and storage addition was completed. Two of our finest, Bill and Charlcie Whitaker, celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary as the first event in this hall. Since that time it has served many church and regional functions as well as a young adult sunday school classroom.

On October 10, 2003, Rev. and Mrs. Parnell celebrated their 40th year of pastoring, serving our guests with a hog roast and pheasants! The men, as a 40th anniversary gift, gave an antique shoeshine stand to commemorate the Pastor's "shoeshine story." As a boy, Brother Parnell made 50 cents shining shoes and paid a nickel tithe. The stand sits in the corner of Faith Hall to remind all of his small beginnings and of the thoughtfulness of the brethren.

At the Business meeting of January 27, 2004, Rev. Anthony Carson became Pastor of CMT and Rev. Raymond Parnell became Pastor Emeritus and Bishop.

On September 1, 2004, Rev. Richard Faulkner started as CMT's full-time Youth Pastor, together with his wife Trisha, and two children, Kaci and Justin.

In January 2006, Bro. Eddie Robinson started as CMT's Youth Pastor and Rev. Richard Faulkner became the Assistant to the Pastor.
